Films
PURPOSE
As this film trailer it is set out in a
non-linear way, it has clips and other noteworthy extracts from the film, it
uses them to purposely promote the film to a large audience, these clips are
usually taken from extremely noteworthy parts of the film without spoiling it
so therefore the purpose of this overall film is to educate and also entertain
in a twisted sort of way.
FORM
The form of this clip is a promotional movie
trailer. Genre of it is a horror/ thriller and this is non-linear.
COSTUME
The costume and make of the main
characters is very fitting with the feel of the film and also the females in
the flashbacks within the film are dressed very provocatively and that is
demonstrating Laura Mulvey's (1975) view on women being portrayed as
objects.
LOCATION
The location of this is set in a rural town
which encodes with the feel of this film which is that of a socially realistic
view on life and that it is quite distance from somewhere set with
verisimilitude in mind. The denotation is that the main character is relatable
and connoted is what makes the audience sympathise with him as he has returned
from war, and this is when Richard returns to go to his brothers
funeral in which he appears in his uniform.
ICONOGRAPHY
A very iconic prop in this film denoted is the
'gas mask' that the lead character wears within the film as a piece to
disturb the other characters and we know this because of their reactions when
seeing the main character in the mask. Connoted by the mask is fear and we
see this in the scene where Richard goes to the flat to intimidate the three
men.
GESTURES
also the body movements and gestures of this
characters makes the others very un-easy as it is demonstrated when Herbie
confronts Richard in the pub and he reacts in a way that is very out of
the ordinary. His gestures show this because he approaches Richard in
a threatening manor to try an get a reaction, this is supported by John
Berger's theory of "men act and women appear".
LIGHTING
Throughout the trailer and film, denoted is
both low key and high key lighting used as it is mostly natural
light whereas there happens to be a large amount of shadows and the sense
of enigma. This then connotes the fear and disturbing scenes that he has seen
which then lead him to forgo the after mass of the other characters.
NARRATIVE
Relating to Kate Domaillie
(2001) theory that all film can fit into one of
eight categories, this trailer relates to
the 'orpheus' categories meaning that in the film there is
a loss of something personal and then they follow
the journey afterward.
NARRATIVE
Tzventan Todorov (1977) also stated the most
common way that films are laid out, and this is with simply, a begging,
middle and a ending, and throughout all films ever made this
has been the most common form in which they are written but occasionally a
film could end with an enigma which would mean there was to be a
coming sequel, very unlike this film.
The film is quite stereotypical as the local
‘gang’ is bullying the lead characters brother and this demonstrates John
Berger's (1972) ideas of men being dominated.
CAMERA ANGLeS
Throughout this film there is a large range
of camera angels all the way through, as we see the
most commonly used camera angle is the close up shot which in Dead
Mans Shoes, is extremely well used as it connotes the intensity of an argument
when Richard and Sonny and head to head as Richard threatens him, this is a
good camera shot to use as we see all the features that add to what the
character is saying, for example the anger connoted by his facial features.
GENRE
The genre of this film is a horror/thriller
which is a hybrid-genre
AUDIENCE
The intended audience for this is film is for
young adults and adults so it is for a more mature audience as the film is not
for an immature demography. also they are an ABC1 audience with a disposable income which means after all they have to pay off they still have money spare for leisure.
IDEAS
I would like to get ideas from the unreal yet
realistic views of this film, which in media terms are the social realism views CAMERA WORK AND EFFECTS
high angles are used to show the importance of the characters when in arguments.
the camera work demonstrated here is a 'shot reverse shot' which is used to juxtapose the protagonist against the antagonist in a conversation. also we see a wide shot being used to add emphasis on the dramatic effect it has upon the viewer.
an extreme close up is used to connote their moods and facial features which sets the mood for up coming scenes.
a dissolve is used to denote a change of scenes, a flash back also shows a changing in scenes
an example of diegetic sound is the conversation between characters. an example of non diegetic sound is the music played over the narration
Dead Mans Shoes (2004) film trailer.
directed by shane MEADOWS. Britain. Warp Films,Big Arty Productions, EM Media, film 4. available at ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFi6FrAV9SE ) [last accessed :10/09/14]
PURPOSE
this is the trailer for This Is England, this was released in 2007. the purpose of this film is to somewhat educate the audience within entertainment by comical attitudes to things that are not normally found to be comical.
NARATIVE
the narrative structure of this film is from the theory of Kate Domilli (2001), in my opinion the narrative style here is 'achillies' which is meaning the fatal flaw that leads to the destruction of a prior near perfect person, in the film this is accurate as throughout the main character is linked to becoming more and more unlike the innocent little boy he should be.
LOCATION
the location of this a working class area obviously with run down and not up to date buildings and architecture, this helps 'set the scene' for the film and other scenes. There is more than one location in this film and there is a clear dominate location which would be the housing scenes are they are quite often show in the film.
COSTUME
the characters in the film are quite stereotypically dressed in an 80's style where the woman and dressed quite provocatively in some scenes which demonstrates the ideas of Laura Mulvey (1975) which is that woman are show to be sexual objects and also demonstrated is the dominance of the men as they are using costumes which connotes the display of dominance (John Berger 1972). The makeup on the character 'Smell' is very theatrical throughout because this reflects the style and senses of her character.
PROPS
a large amount of props are used throughout this film as they compliment the style and the senses of the film for example when they are drinking at 'Smell's' birthday party this denotes they're want to celebrate but therefore it also demonstrates the connotation of their rebelliousness of the characters are many of them are under age and not legally aloud to drink in the scene. some of the gestures displayed connotes the disregard of the characters attitudes towards the law and police as they are displaying disobedience. this also displays the meaning of this film which is hard to interpret but shows the issues of characters during the time when Margret Thatcher was in power and shutting down all the mines which started an uproar with the working class people.
LIGTING
Through the mise-en-scene aspect of lighting, This is England shows a lot of dark lighting on scenes which are generally very dramatic such as the scene when “Combo” severally beats “Milky”.
GENRE
Also it is that a film trailer which is of the crime/ drama genre.
INTENDE AUDIENCE
the intended audience is one that is more mature and able to deal with disturbing and politically significant scenes.also they are an ABC1 audience with a disposable income which means after all they have to pay off they still have money spare for leisure.
COPY
i would like to copy the standard of acting which is shown in this film trailer.
CAMERA ANGELS
throughout this film we see many different camera angles and shots, these are used to keep scenes interesting and more prominent to help keep the audiences attention throughout. also we see that the depth of field is quite readily altered to fit in with the shots being shown throughout. a angle used in this film trailer is a high angle and this is used to connote 'looking down' on someone where a character is looking down on the young by when talking to him. a camera movement demonstrated is a follow of the action when the young boy.
the close up in this film trailer is used to show the emotion of the faces of the actors.
an over the shoulder shot involves the audience in the conversation unfolding or in the scene
a fade to black shows the scene changes or start of title graphics within the trailer
throughout this clip there are many easily interpretable uses of diegetic and non diegetic sound and in this trailer an example of non- diegetic sound is where music is playing over the montage at the beginning of the trailer. an example of diegetic sound is the conversation between characters.

PURPOSE
this is four lions trailer. the purpose of this is clearly to amuse its audience through entertainment as the light take of terrorism is very obvious. this is connoted as the stupidity of the characters is denoting how casually they are taking their 'job'COPY
the comical genius is what i would like to copy from the writer.
FORM
the form is very informal but that is just the story as the actual film is shown in a formal and professional way and also it is non linear
GENRE
the genre of this is a comedy and the target audience is young adults.
LOCATIONS
the locations here are varied as some are in central London, Sheffield and the middle east, these are ultimately very diverse locations and follow the story quite close. this creates verysimilitude fro the audience.
COSTUMES
the costumes of the actors connotes the stereotypes of their characters well as when they are in the middle east they wear stereotypical clothing for their race and religion.
PROPS
Also in the scene where two of the characters go to the middle east they are using many props for what they are doing, for example they are holding and using guns. which is once again very stereotypical of terrorism.
GESTURES
the posture of the characters is very relaxed throughout the film and seem not to be taking things quite seriously for example where one of the characters is sat in the cafe about to pull the trigger and blow up the cafe.
LIGHTING
the over all lighting is very varied as at some points it is very dark and low, where as others are the total opposite. as the four lions trailer is non-linear
NARRATIVE
here we see the narrative structure is from Kate Domillias (2001) theory which is the 'achillies', that means, a lead to the flaw of previously flawless or near flawless person which is destroyed.
INTENDED AUDIENCE
they are an ABC1 audience with a disposable income which means after all they have to pay off they still have money spare for leisure.
CAMERA WORK & editing
low angle is used when the plane is taking off connoting that those charters staying at home are not as important as those leaving.
a dolly is used as a movement and also it could be seen as a tracking shot when the aeroplane is taking off.
there are many different aspects of camera work throughout this film for example, a camera movement close up is used to show the emotion in a characters face.
shot reverse shot, this is used to show the conversation between two characters.
a wipe is used to signal a new location and new subject as a scene goes from light to dark, and sad to happy, this is juxtaposed and relating to the theory of this
A dissolve indicates the same kind of thing when scenes and moods change.
throughout this clip there are many easily interpretable uses of diegetic and non diegetic sound. an example of diegetic sound is the conversation between characters.

cell 211 is a spanish film called (celda 211),
PURPOSE
the purpose of this film is to educate about a different culture and inform about the spanish justice system. the form of this film trailer is formal as it deals with very intimate issues
GENRE
and also the genre of this is drama and as well a thriller.
LOCATiON
the locations in this film are all in Spain and the main location is in a spanish prison. this is connoting the ethnicity of thee actors and their dialect.
COSTUME & MAKEUP
the costumes and makeup of the characters is not very stereotypical to prisoners as the are not the common 'prison jumpsuit', this is because in this certain prison they wear normal clothing which relates to each character individually.
PROPS
the props mostly used in this film are weapons and these weapons are clearly used for their purpose of harming other prisoners and prison guards.
GESTURES
the body movement of the prison guards and their gestures represents to their prisoners that they are an upper body, a higher power that controls them.
LIGHTING
the lighting throughout this film is very effective as it is seen to be dark and low lighting in part where the characters are trying to look sinister and un-nerving.
NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
in this film we see from Kate Domaillies theory of narrative structures that this film fits into the section of 'opheus', this means the loss of something personal and that is shown in this film from the wife losing her husband due to a mistake of the prison guards.
CAMERA WORK
a camera angle used is a wide shot which is used to show the surrounding environment to emphases the feelings within.
some examples of editing is a dissolve is signalling change of feel, eg the whole scene gets darker, fades to black and white is signalling a past memory
a high angle shot is used when looking over the prisoners from a security camera and that is showing the percived control of the prisoners that the gauss have
sound
an example of non diegetic is the roar of the helicopters swooping over the prison dropping off the swat team when the riot kicks off. an example of diegetic sound is the conversation between characters. this is also showing the intese
feel to this as it is not a 'nice film'
INTENDED AUDIENCE
also they are an ABC1 audience with a disposable income which means after all they have to pay off they still have money spare for leisure.
the intended audience is for a spanish ethnicity as that is what language it is in.
throughout this clip there are many easily interpretable uses of diegetic and non diegetic sound, one use of non diegetic sound is the narrative over the clip explaining the current events unfolding which help the audience understand the narrative

I interpreted that the purpose of this film is to entertain through the use of comedy
of the hybrid-genre, which means a mix of two or more genres. This film is a coming-of-age comedy-drama. "All genres have sub genres" - Barry Keith Grant (1995), this theory supports this film as it is not just a comedy or just a drama. also this film educates its audience by showing them the daily lives of someone who is living in the 1980's as it relates to history and the events unfolding in the 1980's.
FORM
The form of this media product is a trailer, the running time of this film is one hour and thirty seven minuets. Previously it was a book that came out on hard cover in 2008. also this is a feature length film, and this means it was made to be successful and aimed at a mass audience it is also non linear.
STYLE
the style of this film is one that is set in history, and therefore is a costume drama with senses of nostalgic views in it. i have identified this from the film as in the scene where Oliver
CONTENT
I will now be talking about the content
the narrative we see it is about the fifteen-year-old boy called Oliver Tate, a boy with big ambitions, who ends up 'head of heels' for that special girl, set in the 1980's in Swansea.
Also in this film trailer we see that binary opposition is demonstrated throughout, as it means that there are opposites, for example in this film it is about a boy and a girl, and this theory was thought of by Levi-Strauss in 1958. Todorov 1977 stated that there is a beginning middle and a ending, and this is correct as it is easily interpreted during the film. I have analysed that the narrative structures used from Kate Domailies theory is the 'achillies' and this means that the fatal flaw that leads to the destruction of the flawless or previously flawless person as we see this connoted because throughout the film Oliver Tate constantly faces issues that bring on his downfall, also we see proven in this film that Levi-Strauss's theory of 'binary opposition' as the opposites of a boy and a girl are relate to this.
we see the main locations in this film are in the Tate household and also at the school which seem as they are to be in the Wales. the iconography here is connoted by the 'lush' rolling hills and scenery. These once again demonstrate verisimilitude as they are not very surreal location and they are classed as 'normal' as they are in most peoples every day life.
throughout this film many of the gestures are quite minimal and not meant to mean anything as their is nothing out of the ordinary even when Oliver Tates parents are arguing they still keep calm postures when it is clear to the audience that they are both on edge. this is connoted by their conversations they are divulging in.
costume and makeup, the costume and makeup is not very extravagant in this film whatsoever as it is has a high level of verisimilitude and also the film is a social realism film which is meaning there is lots of aspects of day to day life that make everything very interesting and complex. this is connoting their simple life that they life as they are in a reasonably medium sized village that is very run down as it seems because it was set in the 80's.
the lighting used in this film is seen to be widely very low and natural as this connotes the loneliness and sadness of the main character Oliver as his home life and romantic endeavours are not to be seen as successful.
throughout this film and trailer, many props are used, fireworks are denoted which connotes the excitement and surreal-ness of there new relationship. also we see that many 'love notes' are used as props, as more than often verisimilitude is demonstrated throughout.
CAMERA WORK
wide angle medium shot, this is where at 0:15 of the Submarine trailer Oliver is seen to be standing staring at the sea and the and we know this is wide angle because it shows a large amount of what he would be seeing excluding his peripheral vision. we also see a close up of the back of Olivers head in the trailer, which is trying to make the audience focus on more than just the footage as the narrative is quite important. Also we see an over the shoulder shot which once again gives us an idea of what Oliver is seeing and feeling whilst denoting the obvious. also we see at 0:24 demonstrated was a medium shot which is connoting the emotion shown on the characters face.
EDITING
shot reverse shot - editing technique which is meant to appear invisible, amount of effort that has gone into cutting it, meant to represent verisimilitude to appear real and natural. this is connoted in the film as where Jordana and Oliver are walking down the hall when they are in school linked with their eyesight even though there is no conversation there is a narrative over the clip.
Eye line match, we see this demonstrated as Oliver and Jordana are having an 'intense' conversation under the bridge that leads to further romance in there relationship to the advantage of Jordana as she get to carry out the 'revenge' on her cheating ex-boyfriend.
SOUND
understanding the differences between diegetic and non-diegetic sound depends on the understanding of the conventions of the film/music video.
throughout the whole film trailer, non-diegetic sound is demonstrated by a voice over connoting and denoting as the video goes on and also the sound track behind when the scenes are being narrated. diegetic sound is the voices of characters and we can see this all the way throughout the film and trailer also their are many ambient sounds that fit into the diegetic sound section. also diegetic sound is also things like the fireworks or in another trailer it could be a gun shot.
intended audience
also they are an ABC1 audience with a disposable income which means after all they have to pay off they still have money spare for leisure.
key words LO1
